Silvestre de Sousa’s 188BET Blog – Friday 11th May 2018
The final day of Chester’s May meeting and it’s the big one, the 188BET Chester Cup.
It’s a race I’ve never won and I’d particularly like to win it this year because of who sponsors it!
I’ve got a really nice ride in the race, but more about him and my other two a bit later. Friday is going to be a pretty manic day for me as I start at Chester and then fly back down south to Ascot for three rides at their evening meeting.
Whether I have a winner or not, one thing for certain is that I’ll definitely sleep well on Friday night.
Anyway, on to the action…
Mickey – 1.50 Chester
I’m on Mickey in the opener for Tom Dascombe. He shaped well at Wolverhampton last time and looked to be crying out for the step back up to this sort of trip.
I guess the only real negative is the draw as life won’t be easy breaking from stall 12. I’ve been saying all week how important a low draw is here and I will have to ride this one for luck I guess.
Grand Inquisitor – 3.00 Chester
A nice ride to pick up for Ian Williams in the shape of Grand Inquisitor who breaks from stall 8.
Another who could have done with a slightly lower draw, but he is consistent and must have a chance if in the same form as when landing a competitive York handicap by five lengths last October.
He’s 13lbs higher in the weights now, though, so he’ll have to be to take this.
Dubawi Fifty – 3.35 Chester (188BET Chester Cup)
The big race of the meeting and I’m really pleased to have been asked to ride Dubawi Fifty for Karen McLintock.
I’ve yet to sit on him, but he ran really well to finish fourth in last season’s Cesarewitch, a race I was lucky enough to win on Withhold.
He’s 7lbs higher in the weights now but has been in good form since, winning twice and only just getting touched off at Newcastle last time.
He has an okay draw in stall 10 and I‘m hoping he can be competitive in what looks a typically wide-open renewal.
Big race sponsors 188BET are offering six places on each-way bets in the race, so I’m hoping I can fill one of those spots at least!
There are plenty of dangers with last year’s fifth Magic Circle and Mark Johnston’s Time To Study looking obvious threats.
It’s then off to Ascot!
Returning Glory – 6.35 Ascot
It’s nice to pick up another ride for Saeed bin Suroor and I’m on Returning Glory for him in the 1m4f maiden.
He finished fourth on his reappearance at Wolverhampton behind Ghostwatch last month and hopefully he can build on that again.
There are only the eight runners, but it looks really competitive with all the big yards represented. Steam Of Stars and Urbino look the obvious ones.
Dougan – 7.40 Ascot
Next up I am on Dougan for David Evans in the six furlong handicap and he won really nicely at Bath last month.
He’s sneaked back up in the weights and is 7lbs higher now, but he ran well here off the same mark of 94 last summer and there is every reason to think he can go well again.
Corazon Espinado – 8.10 Ascot
My final ride of a busy day comes in the last aboard Corazon Espinado for Simon Dow. He’s now won three on the bounce and I was on him last time when he won at Epsom.
Life will be a bit tougher today off a 3lb higher mark in his attempt to win a fourth race in a row, but he keeps surprising and hopefully he can continue to do so.
