188BET Silvestre De Sousa Blog – 3rd June 2017
It’s great to be heading to Epsom on Saturday and even better that I have a ride in the Investec Derby. Every jockey dreams about riding in a race like the Derby and it’s a great honour for me to pick up a ride for John Gosden – anyway, more about that later.
Epsom Derby Day – Unlike No Other
There is no day quite like it. The party atmosphere is something else and I am so excited about being a part of it.
The noises and smells are unique as you make your way to the start – if you’ve been starving a bit to do a light weight it can be hard to make your way past some delicious smelling barbeques!
All you can hear is the huge crowd and the sound of the fun fair. When it comes to actually riding in the race, it’s the one place you can really hear the crowd roar you home.
Should Diore Lia be allowed to run?
Plenty of people have expressed some strong views about this and as I’m riding a 150/1 shot, I’m just keeping my head down!
In all seriousness, I think we do need to look at some sort of minimum rating to be allowed to qualify to run in a race as prestigious and valuable as the Derby.
I can understand the argument that everyone should be allowed to run their horses in the race, but that has to be within reason and Diore Lia shouldn’t be running in the race.
I’m booked to ride four including one in the big race…
Pealer – Epsom 16:30 (Investec Derby)
There is a really big field of 19 for this year’s race and I ride Pealer for John Gosden. I see that 188BET make him a 150/1 chance and, in reality, that is probably about right. He did win his maiden at Southwell last time by 19 lengths, but this does require a lot more.
The positives are that he is drawn well, definitely stays and is trained by a man who knows how to get one ready for a race like that.
The big question is whether he is good enough, but this is the Derby and horseracing is a funny game. I’m hoping he can go well and I’m really looking forward to riding him.
Who Wins The Derby?
As for the most likely winner, I think it’s a straight shootout between Ryan (Moore) and Frankie (Dettori).
Aidan O’Brien has his team in such good form that you have to respect Cliffs Of Moher. However, If I had to narrow it down to one it would probably be Frankie’s mount Cracksman, as he looked really good here in April and will have learnt a lot.
The horse he beat here (Permian) has gone on to win the Dante and very much franked the form. In fact, I reckon Permian could hit the frame again too.
Here are my thoughts on my other three rides…
Tisbutadream – Epsom 14:35
I start the day aboard Tisbutadream for David Elsworth in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.
It’s a race I have been lucky enough to win for the last two years, so fingers crossed I can make it a hat-trick.
She is a filly in great form, having won four of her last five starts and David Elsworth has a good record in this race too. Whether she is good enough to beat Laugh Aloud remains to be seen, but I am hopeful that she can go well.
A Momentofmadness – Epsom 15:45
I ride A Momentofmadness for Charlie Hills in the Dash – the fastest five furlongs in the world. He definitely has a squeak in this, although he could have been drawn better (stall 5) as you tend to want a high draw here.
Top-weight Kimberella has landed the plumb draw in stall 20 and looks the one to beat here. He was only just touched off 12 months ago and it would be no surprise to see him win here.
Sennokian Star – Epsom 17:15
My last ride of the day is Sennokian Star who knows his way around this place with his eyes shut. He is tough and always tries his best and I can be pretty positive on him from stall one. I suppose there is just a concern that he has no secrets from the handicapper and he might be in his grip at the moment.
