Eidur Gudjohnsen Blog | World Cup Last 16 Predictions

16 down, 16 to go. Unfortunately my Iceland are in the eliminated 16 but I think we can be proud of our effort. It started so well against Argentina in the opening group game but we were disappointing against Nigeria in the next game. I thought we had a big opportunity against Croatia as they rested a lot of players but we just couldn’t take advantage. Let’s hope we’re back in 2022.

As for the biggest surprise of the tournament so far, well that’s easy to call. Germany’s elimination was massive news and a big shock. I thought they played ok in their defeat against Mexico and expected their campaign to kick start when Toni Kroos scored the winner late against Sweden. It was not to be though and I think they took things for granted against South Korea. Perhaps it’s time for the nation to regenerate and bring in new players and a new coach.

Now for my thoughts on the eight Last 16 matches.

France v Argentina

France have really lacked the X-Factor so far in this competition and while the talent is there, it just hasn’t been displayed on the pitch. As for Argentina, I think that was a huge win on Tuesday night against Nigeria and while I worry about them defensively I feel momentum is definitely with them.

Eidur’s Correct Score: France 1-2 Argentina

Uruguay v Portugal

Uruguay look good. They’re a big physical unit and are a dangerous side for opponents to outfox. Three wins out of three and no goals conceded, I think they’ll get the job done here. Portugal look ordinary outside of Cristiano Ronaldo and he won’t be able to do it on his own on Saturday.

Eidur’s Correct Score: Uruguay 1-0 Portugal

Spain v Russia

They’ve not quite been at the top of their game but I think there’s still lots to admire about Spain. They don’t have the physicality of other teams but they’re a wonderful, flexible, pacy team. Russia have been a big surprise but their defeat to Uruguay burst their bubble I think. It’s Spain for me.

Eidur’s Correct Score: Spain 2-0 Russia

Croatia v Denmark

Croatia have impressed me more than any other side so far in this competition. I’ve been following them up close as they’ve been in Iceland’s group and there’s a lot to like. With Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic pulling the strings in midfield they have great balance and they should be too strong for a decent Denmark side.

Eidur’s Correct Score: Croatia 3-1 Denmark

Brazil v Mexico

I thought Mexico were amazing against Germany on Matchday 1 and if they bring that level to this game then we could be in for a classic. While Brazil haven’t dazzled us yet, you just get the feeling they have another gear that they can reach when things become serious.

Eidur’s Correct Score: Brazil 2-2 Mexico

Belgium v Japan

Belgium will have too much quality for this hard-working Japan side and I envisage a straight forward win. They’re great to watch and the Quarter-Finals beckon.

Eidur’s Prediction: Belgium 2-0 Japan

Sweden v Switzerland

Defence looks to be the key here and I expect this game to be very tactical. I loved the way Switzerland got back into the game against Serbia last Friday and that determination might be enough to see them through at some point.

Eidur’s Prediction: Sweden 0-0 Switzerland

Colombia v England

I’ve been impressed with England so far. They look fresh, full of energy and look like they’re having fun. Gareth Southgate seems to managing the group really well and it bodes well. Colombia have some good players and I was delighted to see them go through. If they hadn’t had that early red card against Japan then three wins out of three would have been very possible. This match could go all the way and maybe England will finally put to bed their penalty shoot out pain.

Eidur’s Prediction: Colombia 1-1 England
