Glorious Goodwood Tips 2018 | Day 1
Racing tipster Graeme Johnston picks out his best bets from day one of this year’s Glorious Goodwood.
The group action kicks off with the Vintage stakes and this tends to be one of the best two year old races of the season. A field of 12 mainly unexposed juveniles lineup here, and I have my eye drawn to one who has only run once, however he created a big impression and I suspect he is a very smart young colt.
Martyn Meade is having a really good season and he seems to have a very good batch of juveniles. Confiding has only ran once, however he was a very impressive winner of a Newbury maiden and went straight into my notebook. Despite doing almost everything wrong early on, he travelled well into the race and when asked to by Callum Shephard he quicken up smartly showing a real change of pace.
This track tends to suit quicker horses and tactical speed can be vital. He would have learned loads from his debut run and with the promise of more to come he is a very exciting prospect. There are horses who achieved more on the track lining up, however they lack the star potential of Confiding and I’m backing him to win this.
The Lennox Stakes is arguably the main seven furlong race the UK has all season and this is a highly competitive looking race. A field of 11 line up with every runner in the field boasting a win at listed or group level in the past making this a particularly hot renewal. This looks like it will be run at a good pace and I’m backing one who has top level for and comes in to his own at this time of year.
Suedois has had a great career and is a former group one winner. However despite his achievements on the track he is still a slightly under valued horse and at these prices he is incredibly appealing. He loves quick ground however he has won on soft in the past, and over this trip against horses who don’t stay the mile as well as him
His third last time in the Summer Mile reads really well in this line up and a repeat of that would see him go very close. He was third in this race last year and comes into this in better form this time around, I make him a great each way selection for this.
The Goodwood Cup is the highlight of the opening day and part of the million pound bonus in the stayers series. There is only one horse who can claim this bonus still and that is the favourite Stradivarius, and he looks set to take another step towards the monster bonus on offer.
Stradivarius won this race last year before going on to be placed in the St Ledger and the Long Distance Cup cementing his place as one of the countries top stayers. Since then he has taken his form to a new level and he has won three times including the Ascot Gold Cup where despite the small margin he looked a convincing winner.
It can take a lot out of a horse winning that race, however he is a young fresh horse and his trainer would not risk him if he wasn’t 100%. He is very much the best horse in this race and despite the short price I have backed him to win this.
