RACING expert Graeme Johnstone picks out his best bets from Saturday’s races.
A really good sprint in this All-weather fast track qualifier and I am really sweet on Pretend here. Surprisingly beaten last time out I can see reasons to forgive that run and I will be backing him to make up for that here.
He has started once before over course and distance and that was when he was a hugely impressive winner of a fast track qualifier last season.
He is incredibly pacey and last time over six furlongs he didn’t quite settle and was a little keen. There should be plenty of pace here and he won’t be as fresh today.
Connections will be desperate for him to win a qualifier so he can defend his crown and this looks the perfect opportunity for him to do that.
Lancelot Du Lac beat him last time however he’s got a penalty for that win here and I think Pretend will get his revenge as he looks to remind people he is the top sprinter on the all weather.
The Dovecote is arguably the race of the weekend and this novice hurdle will throw up a very good winner. Some top novices line up and whoever wins will be off to Cheltenham with realistic claims of glory.
Eight are scheduled to line up and providing they all turn up this could be a race to play each way. Peter The Mayo Man not only has a great name he is also a very talented hurdler and notched and hatrick earlier in the season. He won each race in good style before connections gave him a well earned break.
He returned at Musselburgh where he was second to the useful Lough Derg Spirit however I think he’s better than that.
The winner that day was left alone in front and is a pacey sort. He was also conceding weight to the winner and is likely to be sharper here. He deserves his place in this field and I think he will be involved at the business end of the race.
