Racing expert Graeme Johnston picks out his best bets from a busy Saturday card.
The Betway Cleeves Stakes over five furlongs has attracted a field of eight speedsters and this will be fast and furious. Lancelot Du Lac has a fantastic record on this surface and is the one to beat but he will have his work cut out here.
There can’t be many trainers as hot as Charlie Appleby right now and he sends course and distance winner Pretend in to to this.
A previous winner of the all weather sprint championship he put a disappointing 2016 behind him when he returned with an easy victory at Kempton in January.
He’s two from two at the track and it would take a brave man to back against him making it three here. Lancelot Du Lac is a favourite of mine but his stable are quiet just now and despite Pretend being short in the betting he stands out to me here as a great bet
The Scottish County Hurdle over just shy of 2 miles is a competitive looking handicap and is likely to be run at an honest pace. It’s great to see top trainers sending representatives up north and this is a race that wouldn’t look out of place at a top Southern track.
Brian Hughes has had the season of his life so far and rides Musselburgh better than anyone. He teams up with the Ian Williams trained London Prize here and this young hurdler is of real interest to me. A winner of his bumper, on the flat and over hurdles he is still improving and could be well handicapped here.
Drumcliffe and Optimus Prime make the long trip up north for a crack at this and have to be respected but neither have won in the past 12 months. In what looks a very good race for the track I’m backing London Prize each way in the hope he can continue his remarkably consistent form and at the very least can pick up some place money.
Graeme Johnston’s Best Bets
14:00 Lingfield – Pretend to win
15:15 Musselburgh – London Prize each way
