Amir Khan knocks down Phil Lo Greco

Khan Swats Aside Lo Greco to Intensify Talk of Brook Bout

It wasn’t just about winning for Amir Khan, it was about making a statement. And the knockout of Phil Lo Greco inside 40 seconds was quite the statement.

Two years out of the ring, including time spent being mocked by the public for his inability to eat grubs on reality show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!, can blunt the tools – especially for a fighter whose primary weapon is speed.

But Lo Greco will be able to confirm that Khan’s blurring hand speed is still there. The Canadian was sent to the canvas 13 seconds into the fight thanks to a crisp combination from Khan.

Sensing victory, Khan did not let his opponent off the hook as a succession of damaging body shots brought the fight to an early conclusion and had the Brit talking about world titles.

“I was a little nervous, but I am back with a big bang,” Khan said, per the BBC. “I want to become a world champion this year or next year.

“I have been out the ring for two years but I was still in the gym working hard, I have never taken a day off. I wanted to prove a point coming back.”

Khan’s British rival Kell Brook was in attendance and the two squared off in the ring, which only served to intensify talk of a meeting between the two.

Neither Khan nor Brook currently holds a world belt, but what they do have are big followings and a British boxing public who would pay good money to see the pair square off in the ring.

Grudge matches can often take a deal of time to negotiate due to the many different people wanting a slice of the pie. That is not the case on this occasion as both are represented by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sports.

The fight can and will be made, but Hearn will ensure it is built up and up before terms are agreed to ensure as much exposure as possible.

The first-round win over Lo Greco confirmed Khan still has speed and great boxing skills, but nothing more. Whether it was enough of a test to set him up for a clash with an opponent of the talent of Brook is not clear. But it appears they are on collision course, possibly in the second half of this year, and it will be a must-see fight.
