How’s it going? I’m very well as another Aintree Festival kicks off today. It’s been a slow few weeks with the bad weather but we all just want to get things going now.
Before I start with Aintree though I wanted to touch on the thoroughly sad news that my old pal Silviniaco Conti had died. He was a wonderful horse who ran some fantastic races and his CV was outstanding with two King Georges, two Aintree Bowl’s and a Betfair Chase. He was the first top-class horse I rode on a regular basis and we had some wonderful days together.
Back to Aintree then and while we’re all excited, I’d be lying if I said I felt the same way as I did the morning of the Cheltenham Festival Day 1. Aintree is a lot more relaxed and the build up just isn’t as big. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, it is what it is.
Just the two rides for me on the opening day:
This is a big step up in class but I reckon he’ll outrun his odds. Look, I’m not saying he’s going to win but I do think he can be in the money. He’s a fresh horse and the ground will suit him. Don’t write him off.
I feel it’s a lot to do with the weather whether this guy runs a big race. He needs the rain, if it goes to Good to Soft he won’t be at his best. To be honest, I don’t think he’s particularly well handicapped.
