Noel Fehily’s Cheltenham Blog | Day 3

No winners for me on Wednesday, but it was a good day. My two big chances were Black Op and Monalee and both ran brilliantly and there was no excuses about their defeats.

Delighted with Black Op

In the opener Black Op run a superb race. He was five lengths clear of the well fancied Next Destination and if you take Samcro out the race would have been an outstanding winner. He ran a blinder. What can you say about Samcro? He was seriously impressive and reminded me a lot of Faugheen when he won this race four years ago.

Beaten by a future Gold Cup winner

I was very proud of Monalee as well in the RSA Chase. He was well clear of the rest of the field and gave me a great ride. Unfortunately Presenting Percy was just exceptional and he looks like a Gold Cup winner. I couldn’t have asked for more when it comes to Monalee.

The best horse I’ve ever ridden

Altior is the best horse I’ve ever ridden and he put in another outstanding display in the Champion Chase. He had to get down and dirty because that ground was tough and for him to do that after what’s been an interrupted season shows his total class.

Gutted for Ruby

Gutting news about Ruby Walsh aggravating his leg injury. I’ve been there myself when it comes to cruel injuries and I’m really feeling for him. This sport is full of ups and downs and the last 48 hours for Ruby exemplifies that.

Onto Day 3…

2:10 Pertemps Handicap Hurdle – What A Knight

He’s the rank outsider as I write this and it’s just going to be far too soft for him. He struggled on this kind of ground last time out at Cheltenham on New Years Day and it doesn’t bode well for here. It’s too soft. Full stop.

3:30 Stayers Hurdle – Unowhatimeanharry

Comfortably my best chance on Thursday and I’m hoping we see more rain in Gloucestershire overnight. If you’ve watched the videos I’ve done on the blog you’ll know I’m really keen on his chances. Harry Fry is over the moon with him and I think he’ll run a massive race. I’m very hopeful.

4:50 Mares Novice Hurdle – Cut The Mustard

She won very well at Punchestown last month but this is going to be a big ask. She’s another one who needs better ground than she’ll get on Thursday.
