Silvestre de Sousa Blog – Tuesday 1st August 2017
It’s the opening day of Glorious Goodwood and if you are looking for my name among the list of jockeys, you won’t see it as I’ve decided to ride at Yarmouth instead.
I’ve always said that I became a jockey to ride winners and will head to the track where I have the best chance of riding one. Of course it’s a shame not to be riding at Goodwood (I’ll be there on Wednesday), but I only had a couple of opportunities there as opposed to seven good chances at Yarmouth.
My sponsors 188BET have also put their name to seven of the eight races there, so it would have been rude not to go there! Anyway, here are my thoughts on the big three races at the Sussex track…
Goodwood 14:25 – Vintage Stakes
A really good renewal of the Vintage Stakes with Aidan O’Brien’s Seahenge looking the obvious one to beat. However, he has only had the one run and will have to be every bit as good as they say he could be to beat Mildenberger. Mark Johnston does so well at this meeting that anything he runs has to be respected.
Goodwood 15:00 – Lennox Stakes
There is a much bigger field than usual for the Lennox Stakes, which puts a little more emphasis on the draw with plenty of the fancied ones out wide.
The ground may not be fast enough for Limato, while obvious contender Librisa Breeze has to break from stall 14. So, things are against the pair, but I still expect class to shine through and them to battle out the finish.
Goodwood 15:35 – Goodwood Cup
The race is now run as a Group One for the first time and as a result has attracted a massive field. Big Orange did really well to win the Ascot Gold Cup last time and will be really hard to beat, even on ground that isn’t ideal.
The likes of Sheikhzayedroad, Higher Power and US Army Ranger will make him work harder than many might expect, but I still think he’ll win.
And, my thoughts on my seven Yarmouth rides…
Midnight Wilde – Yarmouth 13:40
I start the day with one of my best chances aboard Midnight Wilde for John Ryan in the Goodwood Festival Betting at 188BET Novice Stakes! He was a really good second in a much better race at York last time and reproduction of that form will make him very hard to beat here.
Hope Is High – Yarmouth 14:15
Another really good chance on the ultra-consistent Hope Is High who I won on here last month. She has held her form well and looks sure to be in the mix once again.
Free Forum – Yarmouth 14:50
Free Forum didn’t show much in his three starts back in April but has been gelded since. Hopefully that will spark him into action, but he will need to show a lot more than he has done to date.
Buckland Beau – Yarmouth 15:25
It’s nice to pick up a ride for Charlie Fellowes as it’s a stable I don’t normally ride for. Hopefully I can steer Buckland Beau to his first victory on turf, although he will need to step up on his last couple of efforts.
Commanche – Yarmouth 16:00
Commanche is a horse I know pretty well and we finished fifth at Newmarket a few weeks ago. That was the 15th time I’ve ridden him in a race and the handicapper has dropped him another 1lb for that effort. I’m sure he’ll run his usual solid race.
Victory Angel – Yarmouth 17:00
I ride Victory Angel for Roger Varian in the feature race of the day and he isn’t without a chance dropped in class. He was a good winner for me at Newmarket back in April, but has been in at the deep end a bit since including when behind Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. He is in much calmer waters here, but it still won’t be easy.
Annie Salts – Yarmouth 17:35
Only a small field in the finale where I partner Annie Salts for Chris Dwyer. Hopefully she can run well after a little break and I did win over course and distance on her last August.
