Silvestre de Sousa 188BET Blog – Saturday 26th August 2017

The final day of York’s Ebor meeting and once again you won’t see my name on the list of jockeys riding on the Knavesmire.

I had the opportunity to ride a few up there, but none had genuine winning chances and for that reason I have opted to stay at home and ride at Newmarket.

I’ve got seven rides there and several could go very close. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the three big races at York…

York 13:55 – Strensall Stakes

Only a small field for the opener at York where Master The World should be hard to beat. He was very unlucky at Salisbury last time having won at Goodwood before that.  I suppose the only thing is that he would need a strong pace to be seen at his best.

It’s also worth mentioning Mondialiste who bounced back to form last time and can go well with his stable firing in the winners now.

York 15:00 – Gimcrack Stakes

The big two-year-old race of the day and I can’t desert Cardsharp even with his penalty. Mark Johnston’s colt ran really well at Goodwood even though the soft ground would have been against him. If he can reproduce his Newmarket form he will be pretty hard to stop here.

York 15:35 – Ebor Handicap

Such a wide-open race with plenty you can make a case out for. I’ve obviously got a soft spot for Elidor, but he probably needs some more help from the handicapper.

If I had to pick one it would be Roger Varian’s Battersea who hasn’t raced much since finishing fourth in this race last year. He’s a few pounds better off this time and David Egan takes off another useful 5lbs.

Here are my views on my Newmarket rides…

Rockies Spirit – Newmarket 14:05

My first ride of the day is Rockies Spirit for Denis Quinn and he has to carry a penalty here after his win at Thirsk in July. That will make life a bit tough here as he meets some potentially interesting newcomers from good yards. I’m hoping my colt can make his experience count.

Maksab – Newmarket 14:40

I’m looking forward to getting back on board Maksab for Mick Channon in the next. He gave me a nice feel when winning at Leicester in June and will find this a lot easier than the Group Two he ran in last time. It won’t be easy though with the likes of Tadleel and Affina in opposition.

Plant Pot Power – Newmarket 15:15

Richard Hannon has his team in great form so it’s nice to be riding his Plant Pot Power in the seven-furlong handicap. He wasn’t beaten far behind Mazyoun at Kempton last time and the handicapper has given him a chance by dropping him 2lbs. I’m hopeful he can run a decent race.

Codeshare – Newmarket 15:50

A hot-looking staying handicap where I ride Codeshare for Sally Haynes. I won on him at Newcastle back in March, but he has found it tough since then.

He showed up well at Musselburgh earlier in the month and hopefully that signifies a return to form. It certainly won’t be easy against Theydon Grey who is looking to land the four-timer.

Tupi – Newmarket 16:25

The big race of the day at Newmarket where I am booked to ride Tupi for Richard Hannon. He was scheduled to run at York on Friday too, so we’ll have to see what happens. He has won here before and will go close if reproducing the form of his third to Brando in France last time.

General Alexander – Newmarket 17:00

I haven’t ridden as much for Brian (Ellison) this season as I’d like to, so I’m delighted to have picked up a couple of rides for him at Newmarket.

The first of those comes aboard General Alexander in the six-furlong handicap. He has found life tough this season but has now slipped to a mark of just 71. If he was to rediscover his best form, he can be competitive here.

Talliniski – Newmarket 17:35

My final ride of the day is another for Brian and, once again, Talliniski is another at the foot of the weights. He won on his first start of the campaign but has struggled a bit since. Hopefully he can go well now he has slipped back down to that winning mark.
