Silvestre de Sousa Blog – Saturday 29th July 2017

Another ban earlier this week meant I had some more unwanted time off to recharge the batteries at home. My week didn’t begin until Bath and Sandown on Wednesday, but luckily I’ve ridden a few winners since to make up for that time on the side lines.

Saturday is another busy day for me as I’ll start off riding out at Newmarket, then head to Ascot for three rides and finish up at Lingfield to sit on another six! It’s certainly a busy time of year.

Speaking of which, I’ll be back each day of Glorious Goodwood next week with an insight on all of my chances. Anyway, here are my thoughts on my Saturday rides…

Juanito Chico – Ascot 14:25

I start the day aboard Juanito Chico in the Porsche Handicap, where I hope the winning jockey gets a Porsche! He won a nice prize at Epsom and since then has run well at Newmarket and back here earlier in the month.

He wasn’t beaten far last time and is another 4lbs higher in the weights this afternoon which makes things tougher. That was on the round course and he is back on the straight course and will hopefully get a strong pace to help him settle. He is continuing to improve, shouldn’t mind the ground and I’m looking forward to the ride.

Makzeem – Ascot 15:00

It’s not easy to be confident in a 27-runner seven furlong handicap at Ascot, but I’m hopeful of a real bold show from Makzeem. Since being dropped back to this trip he has shown real improvement, winning at Newmarket and then chasing home the impressive Parfait back there at the July meeting.

He gets in here 7lbs ahead of the handicapper and there was plenty of cut in the ground when he won two starts back. He must have a serious chance in this valuable prize, although I respect the likes of Gossiping and Flaming Spear.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – Ascot 15:35

I’ve no ride in the King George and all week I’ve felt Highland Reel would be the one to beat. Last year’s winner is so tough, I just thought he’d outbattle the three-year-olds.

However, the rain that continues to fall makes life a lot tougher for him as he is a different horse on a sound surface. I respect Enable hugely after her impressive Irish Oaks win and the conditions have come right for Jack Hobbs.

Ventura Knight – Ascot 16:10

My last ride of the day at Ascot is Ventura Knight for Mark Johnston who has won his last three starts. I was aboard at Leicester last time and he is definitely improving. Having said that, he will need to step up to win here against some useful looking colts. The likes of Being There look pretty smart, but we will give it our best shot.

I’m then off to Lingfield…

Arcadian Sea – Lingfield 18:00

I have actually ridden Arcadian Sea before when he was fourth at Chelmsford back in May. He has had three starts since and ran well stepped up to this trip last time. If he can reproduce that form he can go well in what looks an ordinary race.

Southern States – Lingfield 18:30

It would be nice if Southern States could win the ‘Get 1/4 Odds At 188BET Handicap’ as it’s another 188BET sponsored race. He’s another one yet to win a race in 11 attempts, but he has hit the frame before and has now dropped down to a mark of 60. Hopefully that may help him be competitive.

Jean Paget – Lingfield 19:00

Mick Channon has his team in good order, so I’m looking forward to sitting on Jean Paget after her debut last week. She didn’t set the world alight at Newbury but will no doubt come on a lot for the run. Having said that, she may need to!

Working Class – Lingfield 19:30

If I’m going to ride a winner this Saturday then Working Class for Peter Chapple-Hyam looks my best chance. He seems to be improving with every start and his second over a mile at Yarmouth last time reads pretty well in the context of this race. Hopefully he will take plenty of beating.

Leith Bridge – Lingfield 20:00

Hopefully the application of a first-time visor will spark Leith Bridge into life in what doesn’t look the strongest of races. Still a maiden after ten starts, he hasn’t been in great form of late, but one of them has to win!

Salt Whistle Bay – Lingfield 20:30

My final ride on a busy day comes in another 188BET sponsored race aboard Salt Whistle Bay who definitely has a solid chance if he handles the ground. The drop in trip looks to be ideal and he showed plenty of potential on his handicap debut earlier in the month.
