Silvestre De Sousa Blog: Saturday 13th October 2018

Silvestre de Sousa – 188BET Blog – Saturday 13th October 2018

The obvious place to start this week’s blog is with the lengthy suspension I picked up under the totting-up procedure on Thursday. The BHA disciplinary panel has banned me for 18 days with six days deferred until January.

I feel it’s a bit harsh and frustrating that they have ruled me out of riding at Ascot next Saturday on a day I was supposed to be there to be crowned champion jockey for a third time. Instead, I’ll now be at home packing my bags for my winter stint in Hong Kong.

Everyone knows I give 100% every time I get on a horse and when you ride as many as I do suspensions are inevitable. I just feel there could have been a bit more leniency shown when it comes to riding on Champions Day, particularly when you consider that I have broken the rules on just five of my 837 rides this season so far, but the decision has been made.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that the ban ends in time for me to ride Withhold in the Melbourne Cup should he get in. There’s a week to go in the season and although I won’t now have many more rides left myself, there’s a cracking card at Newmarket on Saturday featuring the Dewhurst and the Cesarewitch, a race I’ve won for the last two seasons. Hopefully, I can make it three on the bounce…

I’ll Have Another – 1.50pm Newmarket (Zetland Stakes)

Only the seven runners in the Autumn Stakes where I ride I’ll Have Another for Mark Johnston who once again has been a huge supporter of mine this season. I’m so grateful to him as he has given me so many chances in all the big races. I’ll Have Another looks to have a bit to do on paper but is tough and ran really well under a big weight last time. He shapes like this step up in trip will suit too. You have to respect the two Aidan O’Brien runners as well as John Gosden’s Waldstein, but we have a fighting chance.

Massam – 2.25pm Newmarket (Autumn Stakes)

Another one for Mark Johnston in the shape of Massam who has won both his last two starts upped to this trip. This will require a lot more as it’s a step up in class, but he deserves a crack in this company. Whether he is quite good enough remains to be seen, but we’ll give it a go. You always have to respect anything Andre Fabre runs over here and Persian King has looked particularly good. He may be tough to beat.

3.00pm Newmarket (Dewhurst Stakes)

No ride for me in what looks a fascinating renewal of the Dewhurst. I guess Too Darn Hot is the one after three very impressive runs. However, this is his toughest test to date and he meets some smart colts in the shape of Sangarius, Anthony Van Dyke and Advertise. It should be fascinating to watch, but I expect Frankie to come out on top again.

Vis A Vis – 3.40pm Newmarket (Cesarewitch Stakes)

The Cesarewitch has been a particularly lucky race for me recently having won the last two runnings and I’m hoping that run will continue with Vis A Vis. I have never sat on him before but have been chatting to Shane Kelly who knows the horse well. He shapes like this trip should be ideal and I’m really excited about riding him. Plenty has been made about the draw in this race, but I’m not too concerned about stall 22. The truth is it doesn’t really matter where you are drawn if you’re not on the right horse. Hopefully I’m on the right one and we can go close. Looking at the others and I definitely respect Aidan O’Brien’s Southern France who brings Classic form to the race.

Rock On Baileys – 4.50pm Newmarket (Boadicea Stakes)

A big step up in class for Rock On Baileys after a really good run under a big weight here last weekend. She has had a really busy season but continues to run well and deserves a crack at a valuable pot like this.

Awesometank – 5.25pm Newmarket (Darley Stakes)

My final ride of the day is Awesometank for William Haggas in the Darley Stakes. There are only nine runners but it looks a really competitive race. My filly has been in excellent form all season and should like the ground. Hopefully she can go well, although Gabr looks the one we all have to beat.
