World Cup 2018 | Argentina v Iceland Tips | 16th June 2018
GROUP D of the 2018 World Cup kicks-off on Saturday as Argentina take on Iceland in Moscow. Adam Goodwin shares his thoughts on the best betting angle.
Argentina appointed Jorge Sampaoli in May 2017 but after scraping through qualification, many Argentines are currently questioning his ability. The formation and starting XI are still unknown and there are huge uncertainties as to whether La Albiceleste are fully-prepared for this World Cup.
Since their Euro 2016 heroics, Iceland continue to play with the same defensive style that we saw work so successfully in France. After becoming the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup, they’ve struggled to impress and are now six games without a win after recent losses to Peru, Mexico and Norway.
A mixture of Argentina’s lack of preparation and Iceland’s defensive resilience could make it hard for Sampaoli’s side to break the deadlock.
In qualifying, the sides collectively beat the Over 2.5 Goals in just 9/28 (32%) of their games and only Morocco averaged fewer goals per-game than Argentina. I think both sides could struggle to find the back of the net again on Saturday.
On paper, Argentina are far superior to Iceland and I think their quality will ultimately prevail against the Icelandics. The likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria should eventually find a way to breakdown the sturdy Nordic backline, so back Argentina to win and Under 2.5 Goals at a handsome 9/5.
