With both Belgium and England level on points, goal-difference, goals scored, and goals conceded, this Group G decider has the potential to be a classic.
However, permutations mean that some believe a win this Thursday could be counter-productive in terms of the wider context of the tournament.
Judging by recent interviews, Roberto Martinez is an advocate of such views. He’s set to ring the changes. England, on the other hand, are keen on to build on their winning start and growing momentum.
Since the start of the 2017/18 season, the Three Lions are 12 matches unbeaten. In that time they’ve kept the likes of Brazil and Germany at bay. It’s possible that we are yet to see the best of this England side, who could be suited to playing on the counter.
After picking up a knock against Tunisia, Romelu Lukaku won’t be risked. It is rumoured that Kevin De Bruyne will be rested too as he’s a yellow card away from suspension. Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Meunier are in a similar predicament. There are also suggestions that Eden Hazard and Dries Mertens have minor knocks. If Martinez is as good as his word, he will air with the side of caution.
Southgate alluded to England’s recent knockout history to push home the fact he is not looking too far ahead. England will want to top the group. Changes are possible with Kyle Walker on a yellow-card, while Kieran Trippier went off versus Panama with a niggle.
All-in-all England are likely to field a stronger side than Belgium. We can back the Three Lions at 9/10 with the insurance of our money back if the game ends level.
