World Cup 2018 | France v Belgium Tips | 10th July 2018
The semi-finals come to the fore on Tuesday as France face Belgium in a mouth-watering clash in St Petersburg. Ross Casey shares his best betting angle.
The World Cup has thrown up a few tasty pairings in the knockout stages, but the semi-final between France and Belgium has the potential to be one of the best games of the tournament. Both teams go into the match with real aspirations of winning the competition this year, and a win for either team would clearly be a massive step in the right direction, with either England or Croatia awaiting them in the final.
Belgium’s last 16 encounter saw them come from two goals behind to overcome Japan, before defeating a much fancied Brazil side in the quarter-finals 2-1.
Predicting the result of this game is tough, as both sides have the potential to come out victorious. That’s why I’ll be steering clear of trying to predict the winning side – especially as since 1998 just one of ten World Cup semi-finals has been won by more than the single goal.
With such a close call between these two sides, I will go with the better odds here and back the slight underdogs to qualify, so I am backing Belgium to qualify with odds of 6/5. These sides played out a tantalising 4-3 in 2015 with Belgium coming out on top and France haven’t won any of their last three against the Red Devils, so I prefer them at these odds, rather than France at 5/6.
Of course there is concern over their defence, that have conceded in both knockout rounds so far, but they do have the attacking ability to make up for those frailties in my opinion.
