Mexico are in pole position in Group F having collected maximum points against Germany and South Korea in their opening two tussles. El Tri still aren’t guaranteed a place in the knockout stages but know a point against Sweden will secure the position at the top of the pool.

Therefore, Juan Carlos Osorio cannot afford to field a weakened team but the CONCACAF giants remain understandable favourites here.

Mexico have w4-D1-L1 in their last six World Cup finals and Confederations Cup contests, with the two draws against Portugal and the sole defeat against an in-form German side. More recently, El Tri have picked up six victories from nine – including four without conceding against European teams – and appear the most likely winners.

Goals at a premium

Nevertheless, Sweden are obdurate opposition and with the Scandinavians desperate not to depart early, Janne Anderson’s men are likely to adopt a cautious and patient approach as they search for the three points that would give them a fighting chance of a knockout berth.

Considering Sweden have scored just three goals in their last seven matches, seen fewer than two goals in four of their most recent five, and the fact these two teams have both paid out in the Under 2.5 Goals market in seven of their last nine matches respectively, don’t expect an end-to-end encounter.
