An own goal and a penalty led to Nigeria’s 2-0 loss to Croatia on Saturday evening, and they’ll know they need a win against Iceland to still be in with a chance of qualification from Group D.

Iceland defended valiantly against Argentina and managed to come away with a miraculous 1-1 draw. They managed to keep Lionel Messi quiet and even stopped him from scoring from the penalty spot.

Nigeria to score the first goal

Aron Gunnarsson is a key part of the Icelandic midfield and with his fitness still under question, John Obi-Mikel and Wilfried Ndidi could have the luxury of dominating the midfield. Nigeria will also be keen to utilise the pace of Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi when they come up against an ageing Iceland defence.

With this in mind, you should expect a fast Nigeria start on Friday, with the Super Eagles knowing that they need to come out of this game with three points.

With their pace in wide areas and the ability to control the midfield from the off, I like the look of the 21/10 shout on Nigeria to get the first goal against Iceland.

The Icelandic defence looked pretty shaky in the opening 20 minutes against Argentina, with Sergio Aguero grabbing an early goal, and we could see a similar outcome in Volgograd when these two sides meet.
