World Cup Outright Winner Odds
With the 2018 World Cup fast-approaching, of course one of the main ante-post bets from punters is the outright winner market. Brazil are the 9/2 favourites at time of writing, but they will need to break a hoodoo of no South American side winning a European based World Cup since 1958 – could this be the year that 60 year record is broken? Let’s take a look at the top five in the betting…
Since their embarrassing 7-1 loss and exit from the 2014 World Cup to Germany, Brazil have lost just four international matches and only one match in the past two years. They absolutely bossed their qualification, finishing a full 10 points ahead of second placed Uruguay and have Neymar back in the squad after returning from yet another injury.
They couldn’t have asked for a better group with Serbia, Switzerland and Costa Rica all unlikely to offer too much of a test to this talented squad. A last 16 tie against Mexico, Sweden or South Korea will not give them nightmares either, so it is only really once they get to the quarter-finals that they will be tested.
Sometimes that can be detrimental though – and perhaps they will come undone after waltzing past lesser opposition.
Germany are the current World Champions and are second favourites heading into the tournament. Joachim Low raised many an eyebrow by omitting Man City’s Leroy Sane from his 23 man squad and whilst that decision can’t be truly judged until the conclusion of their run, it is testament to the depth of their squad.
They have huge tournament expertise – they have won the World Cup, the Confederations Cup and the European Under-21 Championship in recent years and are fancied to go far again in Russia.
However, before playing Saudi Arabia in their final World Cup warm-up match, they had failed to win in five matches – including losing to Austria in their second to last game before the World Cup!
Third in the outright betting market are Spain. For several years they were the kings of international football, winning the 2008 and 2012 EUROs and the 2010 World Cup. Since then they were knocked out of the 2014 World Cup in the group stage and disappointed again two years ago, losing to Italy 2-0.
Since that defeat they have not lost a single game, that is a total of 19 matches and includes some standout results such as their 6-1 win over Argentina, a 3-0 win over Italy and a 2-0 victory over France. With consistency comes confidence in a side for a punter and at 6/1 they are my pick to win the tournament!
EA actually predicted both the 2010 World Cup (Spain) and 2014 tournament (Germany), so it’s not without some precedent that France could win here as they were this year’s simulated victors!
They were the favourites to win the EUROs last year but fell at the final hurdle in a surprise upset by Portugal. They have won eight of their last 11 matches at time of writing and have a plethora of attacking options. With Laurent Koscielny out through injury there is a question mark over their defence however, with Adil Rami failing to impress many.
Argentina were in real danger of not making this tournament but that man Lionel Messi came up trumps by scoring a hat-trick to take them to Russia. Their reliance on him despite their solid squad is surprising to me and was made most apparent in their 6-1 loss to Spain, where he wasn’t in the team.
They are utterly unreliable, but on their day they are capable of beating any of the other 31 sides in the tournament. Beware though, they have only won four of their last nine matches!
