World Cup 2018 | Spain v Russia Tips | 1st July 2018

The round of 16 begins this weekend, including hosts Russia playing Spain. Our man Jamie Wright offers his betting preview and tips.

Spain v Russia | Sunday 1st July 2018, 15:00 | BBC1

The fact that hosts Russia are in the knockout stages – something that has surprised many – can only be good for the tournament as a whole. They come up against a far sterner test in the last-16 though, as they’ll be taking on Spain, who are some people’s favourites to win the entire competition.

Spain clearly come into the game as big favourites, however neither team will come into this match full of confidence. Russia saw themselves beaten easily by Uruguay in their last group stage game, while Spain could only manage a 2-2 draw with Morocco – hardly the kind of result that potential champions should be getting.

The fact that both sides look slightly suspect in defence is the reason why I think that this will be a reasonably high scoring game. Spain’s glittering talent at the other end of the pitch should see them come out on top though, and you’ll get odds of 1.59 on a simple Spain victory – pretty good considering the fact that Spain are strong favourites.

As mentioned though, I think this will be a high scoring game, which is why my recommendation for this match is that there will be over 2.5 goals, which will get you odds of 2.17 here at 188BET.
